History of Brest, France

The history of Brest is both interesting and varied. The present-day town is situated on the site of a Roman settlement, being positioned on two hills.

The town has a large naval focus (indeed, its one of the largest naval towns in France), with this being reflected by the presence of not one, but two ports. One of these parts is primarily used as a naval base, while the other is more scenic and is largely used for civilian shipping.

The town owes much of its growth to Cardinal Richelieu (made famous in The Three Musketeers), who founded the naval base and was responsible for many of the harbour developments.

The town has also been the scene of much conflict - some between the United Kingdom and France. Fortunately, UK visitors are now welcomed and the town makes a fine spot to begin your visit to France.
