Bansko Bulgaria
The ski resort of Bansko Bulgaria has largely been built around the existing town of Bansko, located in south west Bulgaria, some 140 kilometres from the capital city, Sofia.
For those wishing to travel to Bansko from elsewhere in Europe or further afield, most take the option of an international flight to Sofia, followed by a road journey onwards. There are plans in the pipeline for a new airport to be built specifically to serve Bansko but these seem to be at a preliminary stage - for the time being visitors are forced to make the journey by road and put up with the roadworks that are part of infrastructure improvement plans.
It's also possible to fly to Macedonia and then cross the border into Bulgaria. Few choose to do this, mainly because it is generally easier to get flights into Sofia.
On arriving in Bansko you are greeted by a spectacular view. Despite being some 900 metres above sea level the town nestles at the foot of the beautiful Pirin Mountain. Many visitors visit this area for the winter ski season and the pistes are higher up the mountains, with a total distance of more than 60 kilometres.
The growth of the tourist market here has largely centred upon the demand for budget skiing. The original town has been largely taken over by the skiing fraternity, though you'll find that it's relatively quiet outside of the ski season.
One downside to this development is that property speculators have been keen to expand the original town at a rapid rate. Some feel that the rate of development has been (and continues to be) too quick, though the money that it is bringing into Bulgaria ensures that things are unlikely to slow down in the near future.
