The popularity of Bulgaria as a tourist destination is undoubtedly on the increase. In this article we examine Bansko developments and ask whether too much is being built too quickly.
Until recently Bulgaria was a country that probably wasn't well known by most of us. The former Eastern Bloc state was largely a mystery to many westerners. Things began to change in the 1990s when the Black Sea coastal resorts started to become more popular, with Brits attracted by the lure of sun, sea and sand...all of it available on the cheap.
The fact that we now find ourselves looking at Bansko developments gives an indication of just how popular this ski resort has now become. For many tourists Bulgaria now appeals not merely because of its coastline but because it offers the possibility of skiing on a budget. Prices here are a fraction of those available in the more established resorts of the Alps.
So has this influx of tourists been good for Bansko and can it be sustained? That's a difficult question to answer. The town's ski resort has been built from very little to become the largest and most popular in Bulgaria. This came about as the result of a very intentional policy of the local authorities.
Money has poured into the region and developers, both local and international, have been encouraged to go ahead with Bansko developments ranging from hotels to apartments and villas. This has helped to service the booming tourist economy but has also fundamentally changed the town.
The new apartment blocks seem out of keeping with some of their surroundings. As land prices rise, so developers try to cram more and more properties onto relatively small parcels of land. Bansko seems to be being swamped by this phenomenon. But do people care?
There seems to be little sign of obvious resentment amongst locals, although one can't help but wonder whether they'll one day rue the Bansko developments that have so changed the appearance of this once quaint little town.
