Bansko Ski Resort
The Bansko Ski Resort has risen in a very short time to become the largest and most successful in Bulgaria. So what is it about this former sleepy town that is now attracting so many tourists?
Last year more than half a million people visited the Bansko ski resort, attracting by the budget prices and quality facilities. Wandering through the streets of the old town, it's easy to imagine what this quaint little town was like before the influx of visitors.
The these days the medieval town is over-shadowed not just by Pirin Mountain but by the Bansko ski resort, which has taken on a life of its own. Visitors travel some 800 metres up above the town to plunge back down more than 60 kilometres of marked pistes. Skiing experts suggest that this is one of the best new resorts in Europe, with the local conditions meaning that its perfect for beginners too.
So how does Bansko shape up to many people's stereotypes of Bulgaria? Speaking to one British couple, it was noticeable that the town is more modern than many might expect: "We had images of grey, concrete everywhere". Indeed, much of Bulgaria does appear to contain buildings that would win few architectural awards (nowhere is this more so than in the capital city, Sofia).
The development of the Bansko ski resort, however, seems to have involved a number of Western-based architects and construction companies. The buildings that have resulted from their involvement largely seem to be in keeping with the surrounding mountains. So much so that you never feel far from nature.
Bansko seems set to climb more peaks as it grows into one of Europe's most popular ski resorts.
