Bansko Ski
The Bansko ski resort is the largest and most popular of its kind in Bulgaria. It's undoubtedly benefitted from a large amount of investment from the local authorities, meaning that facilities are of a high standard.
Although the local population might disagree, the Bansko ski resort largely seems to have positioned itself as a budget skiing destination, rivalling the more established resorts of Andorra. The reasons for the success of Bansko are numerous, although the cheap prices have certainly given it an advantageous over other resorts.
Of all the Bulgarian resorts, the Bansko ski location is reckoned to be the best because the micro-climate of the area (140km south of Sofia) is such that the ski season is longer here than elsewhere in Bulgaria. Indeed, the season runs from mid-December to mid-May and natural snow conditions are supplemented by the numerous Bansko ski machines that have been installed over the past five years or so.
The town itself is situated at the foot of the beautiful Pirin Mountain, 925 metres above sea level. Its location means that the resort is ideal for beginners, with a number of gentle runs.
For those who are more experienced, the 65 kilometres of marked pistes are sure to appeal - the skiing here is challenging in some areas.
Let's not get carried away with Bansko though - this is no Chamonix. The resort's popularity is founded on its budget skiing rather than on the sort of luxury that you'll find at resorts in more exclusive areas of Europe. Nevertheless, Bansko makes the ideal location for a cheap ski holiday.
