Eating in Winchester

Eating is one of my favourite pastimes and, fortunately, Winchester's a fine place to get a good square meal!

As you'd expect, the city has its fair share of upmarket eateries, with Hotel Du Vin and the Chesil Rectory being at the top of the list. For those with pockets that aren't quite as deep, here are some of my favourite places to eat in the city:

The Wykeham Arms Hotel: Don't be fooled by mention of the word "hotel" here - this building actually doubles as both pub and hotel. Based on Kingsgate Street, the Wykeham is a popular haunt, so be prepared to book ahead to guarantee your table. Prices aren't cheap, but it's worth paying extra for.

The Willow Tree: This pub doesn't look much to look at from the outside, but it really comes into its own in the summer. Based at the bottom end of the city (just off North Walls), the main attraction here is the garden, which is surrounded by waterways. The owner is also the chef and prides himself on producing good food - a great place to spend a lunchtime or evening.

The Old Vine: Based in the Square (near the Cathedral), the Vine has recently been refurbished and now offers a smoke-free atmosphere in which to dine. I'd recommend the fish cakes!

Prezzo: Like all large towns and cities, Winchester has not escaped the influx of large restaurant chains. Prezzo is the newest and maybe the best of the bunch. Alternatives would include Pizza Express, ASK Pizza and the Slug and Lettuce. Prezzo can be found on Jewry Street.
