Fear of Flying

Do you worry about flying? You're not alone. Fortunately, there are plenty of steps that you can take that will help:

If you do have a fear of flying, then don't be afraid to admit it. In fact, you've made a good step by arriving at this website. You should consult your GP (doctor) as a first step.

A phobia about flying and aircraft is more common than you probably realise and GPs will be used to dealing with people who feel the same way as you currently do.

The most common treatment for phobias is what is known as cognitive behaviour therapy. Typically, CBT will involve using techniques, such as desensitisation or exposure treatment.

Desensitisation is a methodology that involves building up a list of all aspects of your phobia that cause you concern (starting with the least concerning and ending with the most concerning). You are then encouraged to tackle each concern, one at a time.

With the help of a therapist, you'll find that you can deal with your anxiety one step at a time.

Exposure treatment takes a different approach, aiming to have you tackle your fear from the outset and gradually find that your anxiety reduces. Once again, this will be done with the support of a therapist.

If you have a fear of flying but don't want to approach a doctor, then there are other organisations that can offer support, including:

Anxiety Care (Helpline: 020 8478 3400, www.anxietycare.co.uk)
British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (Tel: 0870 443 5252, www.bacp.co.uk)
National Phobics Society (Tel: 0870 122 2325, www.phobics-society.org.uk)
