Flying from Southampton to Dublin
Arriving at Southampton Airport is a pleasant surprise when compared with using the busier London airports that many of us are more familiar with. For starters, this is an airport that has excellent transport links.
If you're arriving by car then you'll notice that it is very handily located, close to both the M3 and M37 motorways. The short-stay car park is on site in a multi-storey facility, directly opposite the main terminal building.
Even the long-stay car park is close by - a short trip on the frequent shuttle buses that run back and forth from the terminal building.
For those who prefer to travel by train, rail links are excellent. The airport has its own railway station (Southampton Airport Parkway). As you get off the train and walk to the platform, you can collect a baggage trolley and then walk the very short walk to the airport buildings (approximately 2 minutes to the airport check-in).
Since the station is on the mainline between London Waterloo and the south coast, travelling to the airport by train is a realistic option.
Once inside the terminal, you'll notice that it is certainly much smaller than other airports around the world.
Flying to Dublin
There are a number of shops within the terminal building but don't arrive expecting it to have quite the facilities of larger airports.
Fortunately, the fact that the airport is compact does have some other advantages. Check-in queues tend to be much less lengthy, while the whole process of passport check and security checks runs much more smoothly than at major airports.
The flight to Dublin from Southampton takes roughly an hour, with you arriving at Dublin's international airport. As you might expect, this has all of the facilities that you would find at any major airport.
There is not, however, a train service from Dublin Airport to the city centre. Rather than opting to take a cab you may want to make use of the regular bus services that do run into the heart of Dublin.
