New York Transport

Once you arrive in the "Big Apple", getting around isn't difficult as New York transport is varied and will get you anywhere you need to go. It can be expensive however so if budget is an issue, make sure you get some idea of what charges are for the various modes of transport before your holiday begins.

The first thing you will need to do is to get from the airport. Find out your options for this before you start on your vacation as arriving in an unfamiliar airport after a several hour flight when you are tired, rumpled and have just experienced the anticipation as to whether your luggage has made it and your papers allow you entry to the US can by tiring enough, without then needing to decide which form of transportation is best to get you to your hotel. Depending which airport you fly into, a taxi could be very expensive because of the distance into the centre of New York City, although it is possible to share taxis with other travellers who are also going in your direction. There are other alternatives such as buses, and some hotels offer meet and greet transportation, so knowing what options you have before leaving home is a good idea!

Once you are checked into your hotel, you have the entire New York City transportation system at your disposal. New Yorkers are very taxi orientated, even for a ride of only a few blocks, but be warned that even those few blocks could take quite some time in a taxi cab because of the amount of traffic in the city. At night it is probably the safest option however, especially for a nervous tourist. The subway is an efficient way of getting anywhere around New York but it is an extensive system so a subway map is a good idea so you can pick the best routes for where you need to be. If you are going across to visit the Statue of Liberty then you will travel by ferry as this is only accessible by boat. Other sightseeing transport possibilities include taking a Circle Line cruise, admiring New York from above in a helicopter ride, taking a short pedicab (rather like a rickshaw) trip in certain parts of the city (mainly during weekends and holidays), booking a limo ride for a special night out, or for something a little more romantic, a horse drawn carriage ride by moonlight in Central Park. If you know where you're going one thing's for sure, you won't be stuck for how to get there as the New York transport options are many and varied!
