When you arrive in Bansko it's hard to imagine that this resort has only come to prominence within the past decade. A massive capital investment programme has seen a predictable surge in the amount of property in Bansko, with locals and foreigners alike aiming to profit in the town's new-found popularity.
Historically, this medieval town was famed more for its architecture and quaint appearance than as a tourist resort. All of that has now changed - foreign visitors are flocking to the town in large numbers, drawn by the improving skiing facilities that are available at comparatively low prices.
If you arrive in Bansko expecting to see something comparable to Chamonix or one of the other established resorts of the Alps then you're likely to be sorely disappointed. This is a ski resort that is trying to get itself established and is growing rapidly, but a fairer comparison would be to look at the resorts of Andorra. Visiting Bulgaria, you'll notice that skiing is largely aimed rather more at the budget end of the market.
So, what of property in Bansko? The local property market has, perhaps unsurprisingly, picked up as the ski resort has expanded. You'll now find a full range of housing available, from studio flats to large apartments and villas. Prices can vary and, although Bansko property is cheap by Western standards, this is currently the most expensive of the three main Bulgarian ski resorts.
Getting to Bansko is relatively easy, with the resort being located 140 kilometres from the capital city Sofia. A number of airlines run scheduled international flights into Sofia from the UK and other European destinations. As yet, flight prices are still relatively high. All of that may well change, however, if the budget airlines start running services to Bulgaria, as has been rumoured.
So if you're looking to purchase property in Bansko then there are certainly plenty of opportunities. Plan your trip wisely and make sure that you do your investigating before you depart.
