Riga Tourist Information
Planning a visit to Riga, the capital of Latvia? There are various sources of Riga Tourist Information, ranging from websites to guide books and local tourist office branches in the city.
Riga is a port city and has less than one million inhabitants. You may be surprised to learn that half of the population is made up of people of Russian origin. People visit the city for a number of reasons but for those interested in architecture and culture it is Old Riga that is the main draw. The old city centre has largely escaped the effects of Soviet era architecture, meaning that this area of the city contains most of the must-see sights. Indeed, it is so impressive that it has been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
As documented elsewhere within these pages, there is no shortage of museums in Riga, covering just about every subject that you care to imagine. These range from memorial museums dedicated to local personalities, to those covering more familiar subject matter for Western visitors, such as the Latvian national Natural History Museum.
Every day in the city can be a wonderful experience – enjoy walking through the old city streets and soak up the bustling atmosphere of this vibrant Baltic capital.
By night, Riga is transformed. If you like to party then you’ll find that there is no shortage of opportunities. Many of the city’s bars stay open until the early hours and you’ll find that Latvians love to drink and party. Local drinks certainly have something of a “kick” to them, but you’ll also find that foreign beers and lagers are easy to find in most pubs, particularly those that are aiming for a trendy clientele.
Getting around the city is relatively easy. You can pick up information from the Riga Tourist Information Office and you’ll find that there is a very complete, efficient public transport system, which runs from 5.30 am until 11.30 pm. For those wanting to stay out later, there are some night buses that run hourly. Alternatively, you can take a taxi, or simply walk back to your accommodation if you’re fortunate enough to be staying in a central location.
