Skiing is often thought of as being a pursuit mainly for those who are moderately well off, but skiing in Bansko tackles such stereotypes. This new resort has largely been built during the past 5 years or so and is attracting increasing numbers of skiers, particularly from the UK. The message seems clear: skiing in Bansko is available to the masses.
Bulgaria may not seem like an obvious place to ski. After all, for those who haven't spent time in Eastern Europe, the thought of Bulgaria may conjure images of a rather dull, bleak place. Fortunately, we found the reality to be rather different.
Up until the 1990s skiing in Bulgaria generally meant visiting one of the two established resorts, Pamporovo or Borovets. These two resorts were viewed as being functional but lacking some of the mod cons that Western travellers might expect. The Bulgarian authorities, keen to leave this image behind and to try and attract tourist income, have undergone a process involving upgrading those two existing resorts, while developing a new resort to allow for skiing in Bansko.
The town of Bansko has been on the map for many years but the development of the last decade has seen a great change, with new hotels and apartments springing up, as well as the infrastructure that you would expect of a top ski resort. Progress has been rapid, so much so that the town is hoping to host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
So what is it that attracts people to come skiing in Bansko? Well, as we've already alluded to, price is a key factor. You can visit the relatively uncluttered slopes of Bulgaria for a fraction of what you'd expect to pay for similar skiing conditions in the Alps or North America.
The Bulgarian resorts are even managing to undercut the previous budget ski favourite of Andorra. You can now fly to Bansko and stay in accommodation for up to 20% less than you'd pay for similar facilities in Andorra. You'll also find that the cost of living is considerably lower when you get there, ensuring that your holiday money will go that bit further.
All in all, it's not surprising that many experts are tipping Bansko to become the most popular budget ski resort in Europe.
