Visiting New York

Although there has been increased security awareness since the 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, visiting New York City has remained a top tourist favourite within the USA. When visiting the city for the first time however, tourists can be completely unprepared for the sheer vastness of the city, the amount of people and traffic on the city roads, and the distance between the various things they want to see and do during their vacation in the Big Apple.

Because of TV shows, and movies, much of the skyline feels strangely familiar. However, the Statue of Liberty and other important landmarks are not always situated as close to each other as is thought, and so one of the most vital things any tourist needs to read before getting to New York is a good tourist guide book and if possible, current city map showing where the main tourist attractions are located in relation to one another. This will enable anyone visiting the city to plan their vacation in advance so that they make the best possible use of the time they have there. If time is limited, then it's possible that because of the distances involved, choices might need to be made between several possible attractions.

Once a list of attractions has been made, then book accommodation which is as central to these as possible so that as little time as possible is spent getting to and from the individual places. Unless travelling outside of New York City is intended, a hire car is not usually required, and can even be a disadvantage over the public transportation system because of the volume of traffic on the roads and expense and scarcity of parking spaces. As long as normal caution is taken, the subway is a relatively safe place (although travelling alone on the subway at night is not a good idea, especially in some parts of the City), and will get you where you want to be quickly and without much effort. Study the subway map so that you don't look lost - tourists are often more of a target for criminals and con people than the residents of the city!

Visiting New York is an experience in itself - even without the famous landmarks that identify it. Not only is it a city where cultures mix and new blends with old, it's also a city which has a pace of its own. A fast pace where even ordering a sandwich or cup of coffee can be as memory making as the view from the top of the Empire State Building.
