Weather in Riga
For those of you planning a first visit, you may be wondering how the weather in Riga compares with elsewhere in Europe.
The highest temperatures are found in June, July and August, with maximum daytime temperatures typically reaching an average of 22 degrees Celsius in July. You should be aware, however, that rainfall can also be very high during these months. The wettest spell of the year lasts from June to November.
If you’re looking to visit in the summer months then June is generally driest, with the highest average percentage sunshine (typically 40% of each day).
By comparison, the winter months are extremely cold, with less rainfall (although a lot more snow!). January and February are particularly harsh, with the average maximum daytime temperatures still below zero degrees. In January, you can expect to see sunshine less than 5% of the time.
So the winter is certainly cold and sees far less visitors, with some airlines only flying from the UK to Riga during the warmer summer months. The Latvian capital does have its own charm off-season though, for those of you that are hardy enough to deal with the colder extremes!
If you’re wanting to see what the weather in Riga is like on any particular day then you’ll often see temperatures and climate conditions printed in national newspapers. Alternatively, there are a number of websites that provide weather forecasts for the Baltic states, including Latvia. My own particular preference is for www.weather.com but you may well have somewhere that you consider to be more reliable.
