Winchester Hotels
There are plenty of Winchester hotels to stay in but if you're visiting this Hampshire city for the first time then you may be wondering which one to choose. Don't worry - help is at hand!
I've been living in and around Winchester for the past decade, so I like to think that I know the city pretty well. The first thing to say is that it is actually a very compact city - this is something that visitors from the United States, in particular, seem to find quite surprising.
Though US cities are often on a grand scale, Winchester's positioning as a city has more to do with its history and, of course, the presence of the famous Winchester Cathedral.
The benefit of the city being so compact is that most of Winchester hotels are within very easy walking distance of the centre. This means that you don't need to pay a premium to stay right next to the cathedral - unless you so choose.
In fact, talking about staying right next to the cathedral turns my thoughts to the Wessex Hotel - the closest hotel to the cathedral, practically being in the cathedral grounds.
The website for the Wessex Hotel (part of the Macdonald group of hotels) includes a number of photos showing the fine view of the cathedral. What you may not read in the tourist brochures is that the outside of the hotel itself could not be described as being picturesque - only the least objective would suggest that it is in keeping with its surroundings.

The Wykeham Arms Hotel, on Kingsgate Street, is almost exactly what you'd expect a Winchester Hotel to look like. This fine pub has some 14 rooms - you will pay a hefty price but the quality here is comparable with any of the Winchester hotels - the food served in the pub itself should not be missed. Indeed, at the time of writing, I would regard it as one of the two best pubs in Winchester for food (the other being the Black Boy).
The Winchester Hotel was once known as the Moat House. Though further from the city centre than both the Wessex and the Wykeham Arms, the Winchester Hotel does seem to offer some cheaper deals. Walking from here to the cathedral is still no more than a 10-15 minute walk.
The Royal Hotel is, once again, close to the city centre. As ever, you'll pay that little bit extra for the privilege.
